A landmark of national heritage under transformation
Built in the mid-12th century, Newark Castle stands as one of Nottinghamshire’s most iconic historic structures. Over nearly 900 years, it has played many roles – including a court of law, a soldiers’ garrison, a cattle market, and a coal wharf. Today, it remains a celebrated Scheduled Monument and is recognised for having the most complete Romanesque gatehouse in England.
A major regeneration project is now breathing new life into this important heritage site. Supported by significant investment from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the UK Government’s Towns Fund, and Newark & Sherwood District Council, the Newark Castle Gatehouse Project aims to create a dynamic visitor attraction. The scheme includes extensive conservation work to protect the medieval structure, new interactive galleries, improved accessibility throughout the grounds, and the reinstatement of the original gatehouse entrance. Once complete, it is expected to attract tens of thousands of additional visitors each year.
Central to the transformation is the creation of a new welcome centre – a structure that required carefully designed engineering solutions and full sensitivity to the historic environment.
PPG Projects’ contribution
PPG Projects were appointed to provide the precast hollowcore flooring and precast stair units for the new welcome centre. These elements form the structural access and the new floor level at the front of the castle. In addition to delivering and installing the precast components, PPG Projects also completed all associated wet works and managed the full design process for the precast elements.
Project highlights
The structural precast components supplied by PPG Projects form an essential part of the new welcome centre’s construction, creating a flexible learning space beneath the Gatehouse bridge. The hollowcore slabs provide a strong and reliable floor structure, while the precast stairs will create safe and durable access routes for future visitors. The wet works ensured that all elements were integrated correctly, creating a cohesive and long-lasting structural base.
Throughout the construction process, careful attention is being given to the castle’s historic fabric. All works carried out adjacent to the 12th-century gatehouse require a sensitive approach that aligns with strict conservation standards. Close collaboration with conservation specialists will ensure that every aspect of the installation is designed to protect the monument’s integrity.
This area will be used for school visits, community groups, and outreach activities, giving residents and visitors a new space to come together. In addition, the redevelopment features a dramatic tower-top viewing platform, offering views across the Trent Valley that have not been seen for nearly four centuries.
